Reduce the Length of Swing Drill

This drill from Justin Stone, Director of Hitting for the Chicago Cubs, is designed to help reduce the length of swing and help players slot tighter to their bodies.

In the video below Coach Stone demonstrates what he likes to call the Check Swing Drill. He utilizes a ling piece of PVC to simulate a bat.

Coach Stone what the players to swing with a maximum effort so that they can feel what it is like to shut down half-way into their turn. The player should be able to hear a “swoosh” as the stop and transfer energy to the PVC.

He states that in order for the body to go quicker, it must trust that is can shut stop the movement if necessary. Your brain simply will not let you go faster than you are able to stop.

The video below is just a small clip from Coach Jones’s instructional video. Coaching hitters is becoming more of a science than an art. In his instructional video Coach Stone will explain how he uses various pieces of biomechanical information to coach his hitters and offers many movement exercises and drills to help hitters get their body into the correct positions to hit.
